Laundry Room Make-Over

At the Casa de Uppmans, we split up chores around the house. While Erik picks up the kitchen and keeps the dishes washed, I’m in charge of the laundry. There is something extremely satisfying about watching the mounds of dirty laundry become clean, and putting them away for new use. And while I’m not the greatest about staying on top of it, I have decided a happy laundry room helps tremendously in the task.

We are currently renting a great little ranch, and it includes a laundry room off the kitchen. When we moved in, we were greeted with this pasty, boring sight.

We actually put that shelf in above the washer/dryer. It was simply a laminated board from Home Depot, cut to size, screwed into some shelving brackets. Less than $10 total!

While functional, this room definitely wasn’t inspiring. As usual, I got right on Pinterest to make an idea board. I found myself drawn to ‘Tiffany Blue’ rooms-a beautiful shade of aqua blue. Check out all the pins that inspired my room here!

I bought the paint and then the project stalled. Just thinking of trying to paint behind our hot water heater or furnace made me tired. I held on to the can of paint for over 6 months until we hired Mr. Mendez to paint our living room-and he threw in the laundry room for free! If you are looking for a local Monterey Bay painter, I HIGHLY recommend his painting crew-they do fabulous work for extremely reasonable rates, and they are the reason I have my beautiful laundry room now!

I put chalkboard paint on the pantry door after they painted the walls-super easy with a roller!

Once the room was painted, I could start working on the accessories. I put W-A-S-H letters on the wall from Micheals. Every male that walks into the room asks why I need to label the wall-insert eyeroll. 😉 I pulled out my Silhouette Cameo and made a ‘Department of Missing Socks’ decal for the wall-we hang up the single socks we find here, hoping they will meet their mate in a future load. The curtains are from Ikea-$3 a package!

I put up more Ikea curtains over this window, pulled out some black & white sketch art I had gotten years ago from the Montreal Art Fair and put all our laundry items in clear containers to help clean up the shelf area (more on that later). The rug is from Jo-Ann Fabric.

This area, tucked behind our door, houses all our brooms and mops. I also keep a shelf here that houses our mopping bin and any other misc. tools for cleaning. I just can’t get over what a great job Mr. Mendez’s paint team did on the walls with all the nooks and crannies!!

When organizing my shelf area, I wanted it to have a clean look. I had a bunch of glass canisters that I had previously uses in the kitchen for dry goods. While trying to un-clutter those counters, I stuck them in storage. They were perfect for this room! From left to right, the containers hold Tide Original laundry detergent (for regular loads), Tide Sport laundry detergent (for our workout clothes), vinegar, bleach, Oxyclean, Clorox bleach wipes, Dryell at-home dry cleaning kit, dryer sheets and dishwasher packets. One of my jobs over the holiday break is to use my Silhouette Cameo to label all the jars.

My goal with the chalkboard door was to change out the design each season. That’s on the top of every mama’s to-do list, right? Re-do chalkboard design for each holiday? Obviously, that is not happening. But I did get a fun one done for Christmas by projecting a design on the door with our projector and tracing it with a piece of chalk.

So there you have it! Our laundry room. There is still much to be done: labeling the jars, getting a chandelier for the lighting, finding places for more Pinterest ideas… but this is a good start!

Anyone else have a fun laundry room? Share your Pinterest board or blog post in the comments!

I love your whole room–if you want to get even more organized, you can get those wall mounted broom and mop organizers–so easy to use and lines them up all nice and neatly in a row! I love mine.
